The railway line KBS 931 "Munich - Freising - Landshut - Plattling - Passau"
|
The section from Munich to Landshut was built by the "Königlich privilegierte Aktiengesellschaft der bayerischen Ostbahnen" and was set in operation on 3. November 1858. The section from Plattling to Passau was also built by the "Königlich privilegierte Aktiengesellschaft der bayerischen Ostbahnen" and was set in operation on 20. September 1860. On 15. October 1875 the section Pilsting - Plattling and on 15. May 1880 the section Landshut - Pilsting was finished.
The electric traffic on the line began at first in the section Munich - Freising on 28. September 1925 and in the section Freising - Landshut on 3. October 1925.
On the remaining part of the line electrical traffic began only on 25. May 1976.
The train service
Till December 2009 regional express trains (RE) operated on the line every two hours. The trains operated as push-pull trains with a locomotive of the series 111 with two double deck coaches and two n-coaches. The trains were added with double deck coaches and n-coaches in the rush hours and on weekends.
Also a regional train (RB) operated every two hours. These push-pull trains were composed of locomotives of the series 143 and 4 - 5 n-coaches. But the regional trains ended or rather began partly in Freising or Landshut.
From the BMW factory in Dingolfing also several goods trains operates via Landshut to Munich and Regensburg.
Starting from 13. December 2009 the "Donau-Isar-Express" operates exclusively in the passenger traffic on the line, which connects Munich hourly with Landshut, Plattling and Passau. Operator of the "Donau-Isar-Express" is the DB-Regio and motor train sets of the series ET 440 (Alstom Coradia LIREX) are used. The regional express and the regional train used so far will be omitted.
Due to a missing approval of the new motor train sets by the "Eisenbahn-Bundesamt" (EBA) because of problems with the brakes, delays were caused. A little spring, which should automatically adjust the brake shoes, depending on wear and tear, failed again and again. According to the EBA there were still other problems with the vehicle. The service on the line had to be accomplished with the old coaches beyond 13. December. The four-part motor train sets were only released for passenger traffic on 5. March and the five-part motor train sets were released on 8. March 2010 by the EBA. On 26. April 2010 finally the maiden trip of the first motor train set, which was baptized to the name "Passau", took place. Starting in summer the new motor train sets are to be used for regional service.
The new vehicles are constructed in the factory of Alstom in Salzgitter. The DB Regio has ordered 12 trains for the service of the "Donau-Isar-Express".
